When I was first starting out as a salesperson, I didn’t know what to do with my time. I’d been hired by a small company that had a large warehouse, and they had me do all the shipping while they dealt with customers.
I got really good at this over time. But eventually, the owner decided he wanted me to be on call 24/7, even if there was no work for me. That’s when he came up with the idea of using vinyl flooring as an excuse to keep me busy all day long.
It wasn’t hard to convince him that this was a good idea. After all, we had lots of space in the warehouse and needed something to keep us occupied while we waited for orders to come in or finished products to be picked up by customers. And it seemed like vinyl flooring would give us something new to do every day!
I’m a salesperson, and I’m going to be honest with you: I was a terrible salesperson.
It was an 8-foot-long roll of vinyl that looked like a sheet of tinfoil. It had to be cut into the right size and installed in my house by the end of the day, or else my wife would call me a liar.
I had never worked with vinyl before, so I didn’t know how it was supposed to work or what it would look like when it was done. But I knew that if I didn’t get it done, she’d be mad at me for weeks.
I don’t do this every day, but when I do, it’s like a party. I show up to a customer’s house and they’re excited to see me. They’re ready to talk about their flooring options and ideas for their home. It’s the best feeling in the world because I get to make a positive impact on someone’s life.
It also makes me a better salesperson. When you meet with potential customers, it helps you stay on top of things and sell yourself more effectively. You can talk about your products in great detail — how they’re made, what they look like, how durable they are — instead of having to rely on marketing materials or your own memory about them from months ago when you were researching them online!
